Bearsden Academy was founded in 1911, and is a non-denominational, six-year comprehensive school situated in the suburb of Bearsden. Its location in the heart of the town gives it a central focus in the community, and it is within easy reach of the four associated primaries: Baljaffray, Bearsden, Castlehill and Mosshead. In addition, a significant number of pupils transfer from St Andrews Primary in Bonnaughton, and placing requests from Glasgow, Clydebank and beyond account for about one third of the current roll of 1362.
Bearsden is an excellent school with a long and proud academic tradition, and has the enviable distinction of being among the top performing state schools in Scotland. Added to this is an impressive record of achievements in other spheres of school life, thanks largely to the provision of an extensive range of extra-curricular activities in which pupils are encouraged to participate. The award of a prestigious Barclays New Future prize in 1999 has enabled senior pupils to develop closer contacts with the community.
The main building dates from 1958, and the teaching accomodation has been extended over the years through the addition of various annexes and, most recently, a brand new library. There are currently severe pressures on our accommodation to the extent that the role has for several years been capped at an 8-class intake. The school has recently been fully equipped with an ICT network, and a major investment has been made in hardware and peripheral equipment to support the expansion of ICT in the curriculum.
The staffing complement is currently 93.8 f.t.e., and includes a Senior Managment Team of seven, a Guidance team of 4PTs and 7 APTs, with 18 PTs and 5APTs (subject) and 5 Senior Teachers. The school was inspected in 1999, and the experience and qualifications of the staff were highlighted as one of its strengths.
Both the School Board and the PTA are active and very supportive of the school, and parents generally are very supportive of consultation and information evenings, as well as extra-curricular events. There is a highly positive ethos in the school, and both staff and pupils are committed to excellence - the byword for Bearsden Academy.
Bearsden Academy aims to:

- Encourage pupils to achieve their social, physical and aesthetic potential
